Your BMI is

Underweight

Your BMI falls within the underweight range. This suggests that your weight is lower than what is considered healthy for adults of your height.

If you are underweight, think about why this might be. Could there be an underlying medical cause, such as overactive thyroid? Has worry or stress caused you to lose your appetite? Or have negative feelings around food kept you from eating well?

Weighing too little could be a problem as it can cause nutritional deficiencies, a weakened immune system, and fertility problems. Therefore, if you are underweight, please consult a healthcare provider on gaining weight safely and remaining healthy.

What are the effects of age and gender on BMI?

Basically, the BMI can be used for all people from the age of eight to roughly classify the body weight. However, the categorization given is only suitable for adults aged 18 and over. A separate BMI table is used for children and adolescents. But it also makes sense for adults to take age into account when classifying the BMI. The reason for this is that the normal weight range shifts slightly upwards with age due to changes in metabolism and body composition. It is therefore quite natural that with increasing age one gains a little weight and with it the BMI also increases slightly. Gender should also be taken into account in order to get a more reliable classification. Men usually have a higher BMI due to the physiologically higher proportion of muscle, which means that the range of normal weight shifts somewhat upwards.

Limited informative value of the BMI

The BMI is a good method for quickly and easily classifying your own body weight and for assessing possible weight-related health risks. However, it is not suitable as the sole criterion for classifying individual health, as other important circumstances are ignored. The BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass, which can lead to athletes being incorrectly classified as overweight.

On the other hand, a BMI in the normal range does not guarantee that you are not exposed to any health risks. Another simple method that allows a more accurate assessment of the health status or disease risk is to measure the waist circumference. Metabolically active abdominal fat, which promotes the development of many weight-related diseases, can be determined using this method and a more precise statement can be made about the state of health.
