Think luscious, extravagant, colorful, and above all, creatively when you consider how to make a good smoothie. “Good” doesn’t cut it.

A Smoothie Should be Awe-inspiring or Why Even Bother?

Start with only the fresh, best, and most healthy ingredients. Cut down on your vacation fund if you must, but don’t skimp on your smoothie!

A smoothie can look and taste like an elegant dessert in a glass, but don’t let that fool you. When done right, your smoothie is a substantial superfood. Because it’s already broken down by blending, it’s easy on the body to digest, allowing for better absorption of nutrients.

You’ll know you’ve got the right recipe when your eyes bulge, the taste buds tingle and energy levels go super-status. Yes, all of this and it's good for your diet, too.

Best Way to Make a Smoothie

There are as many ways to blend up a smoothie as there are recipes for grandmother’s meatloaf.

The basic tools of the smoothie trade can be as minimal as a large glass and a spoon. For portability and convenience, a jar with a lid or a blender bottle quickly mixes the contents wherever you may be - just shake it up.

When you want to chop up or even liquify ingredients like spinach or other high-voltage veggies, an electric blender is useful and will yield creamier results when adding fruit or seeds and nuts.

It’s best to use raw, unsalted nuts or seeds, and if you pre-soak them in water for a few hours or more, they'll make your smoothie even smoother. Some great tasting and healthy varieties are sunflower and pumpkin seeds, almonds, walnuts, and cashews.

Consider your health goals and enhance your smoothie with veggies. Grate some fresh raw carrots or beets. They add a unique color, flavor, and sweetness as well. A few kale leaves won’t hurt, and fresh ginger root, turmeric, and coconut add their special zing to any recipe.

The core of any smoothie begins with the liquid base. Unsweetened almond milk is commonly used or other plant-based milk, like soy and rice or nuts such as cashew. Peas are one of the newer plant sourced “milk” beverages on the market.

Plain or flavored yogurt with added water works well. Add a drop or two of edible rosewater for a subtle aromatic appeal. When watching your weight, it's best to avoid fruit juices - or at least dilute juices with water (or ice) when blending. Coconut water or low-fat coconut milk is perfect for tropical smoothies.

Fruits are the encore that brings down the house. Bananas add in a creamy texture and mild base flavor to all smoothies along with a healthy dose of potassium, magnesium, and vitamins C and B6. The fruit pectin in bananas adds fiber, as well. Adding fruit to a smoothie is healthy, but when making smoothies for a weight loss program, it’s best to use fruit extract or no fruit at all for best results. Eventually, as you see movement on the scale, you can add 1 serving of fruit back into your diet. Almased’s Diet will guide you on when it is ok to add fruit.

Is There Any Doubt That These Smoothies are Good for You?

TIP: Have you ever tossed out an over-ripe banana? Freeze them instead. You can easily freeze fresh fruits when abundant in season or buy them already frozen.

Most berries add not only flavor and color, but also come with a low glycemic load making them ideal for dieters and those who watch their blood sugar.

Add to the list some mangos, papaya, peaches, pears, plums, melon, and apples, and you have a variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients cleverly dispensed in your diet.

Most fruit comes sweet, so be slow to add sugars. A bit of honey, if needed, is best. A single Medjool date works as well. You can also spoon in maple syrup or drop in a natural stevia leaf (from a plant that is easy to grow and also looks charming in any home).

Flavorings, extracts, and spices are the extra goodies that can bring out your creative genius. Start with what you know you like and go from there. A spoonful of cocoa, a sprinkle of cinnamon, vanilla extract or even a bit of coffee can jazz things up.

When making a meal of your smoothie, top it off with flax seeds, toasted rolled oats, chopped nuts or almond butter. A few mini-chocolate or mint chips add a special touch. The list goes on and on.

Toss in the ice cubes, and you’re good to go.

Almased’s 1-2-3 Step Smoothie Recipe:

1. Blend Almased with 10-12 ounces of bottled or filtered water and 1 to 2 teaspoons of either olive oil, flaxseed or walnut oil (you can alternate).

NOTE: These oils are recommended because they are higher in omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. Some may add a nutty flavor, while others may go unnoticed.

Important facts are often limited on a meal replacement diet. Adding the oils gives a huge nutritional boost to the Almased Smoothie. High-quality fatty acids are essential for efficient brain function, energy, and a vibrant metabolism; also for the full absorption of several fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.

TIP: When dieting for weight loss, the quickest results come from using water in your smoothies. You may also use unsweetened almond, soy, or skim milk. When maintaining your ideal weight, you can then move up to diluted fruit juice and coconut water with no added sugars.

2. Almased Smoothies are neutral-tasting, so you can enjoy them plain, or flavor them to your taste with cinnamon or other spices, instant coffee powder (or use cold coffee instead of water for mixing), a dash of cocoa or a few drops of your favorite extracts, like vanilla or lemon.

TIP: Adding fiber to your diet is essential, and it’s easy to include in your smoothie. Try flax, chia or psyllium seeds by tossing into your smoothie before blending or sprinkle on top when serving.

3. Add your favorite fruit, but please note the fructose in fruit can slow down a diet’s progress. So, if rapid weight loss is your goal, as in during Phase 1 of the Almased Diet, it’s best to flavor your smoothie as mentioned above. Save fruit for the maintenance stage of your diet. Keep in mind to have no more than 1 fruit a day is recommended during phase 2.
