Being Overweight is a Widely Spread Phenomenon

Being overweight is a widely spread phenomenon of our western civilized society. While fluctuation of up to 10% of normal weight (height in cm – 100) is acceptable, more than 20% over normal weight can be a health risk. The reasons for being overweight are mostly due to diet and lifestyle, i.e. whether we are physically active or not. Only two out of a thousand people can legitimately claim hormone trouble as the cause for being overweight. A heavy bone structure only adds 4-6 pounds to your weight. Heredity certainly plays a role as a potential cause but the extent of genetic influence is mostly unexplained.

A calculation of what your ideal (or target) body weight should be from an objective point of view is very important. The calculation in Step 1 of the Almased Workbook for Weight Loss section at the back of this book is widely used to calculate ideal body weight.
