Any advice for those with Type I

Hi, I have just ordered a "test" container of Almased to see how I might do on it. My question is about the amount of insulin to take with each serving of Almased. Do you still recommend 1 unit of Novolog while still keeping the long-acting Levemir the same (in my case 25 units once a day)? Thanks, David

Hi David, Welcome to our forum. It is nice for you to join us. One serving of Almased consist of 1 unit of carb. For every 1 unit of carb, only 1 unit of insulin is needed before each serving. We recommend to continue the use of your medications as directed by your doctor. If your blood sugar levels run low twice in one day, be sure to consult with your physician for medication adjustments. It is common that when a change is made to a diet, medications may also be changed. Have a wonderful weekend. - Jamie

Hello Krob, Welcome to the Almased forum! Please let us know how you are doing and don't forget to check your blood sugar levels closely, especially at the beginning of the diet (right before an Almased shake & 2 hrs thereafter). I also encourage you to check out our Diabetes Figure Plan brochure for more information on the diet: http://www.almased.com/nutrition-and-diet.aspx Silke

Thanks, Silke. Everything is going just fine. Of course, as a Type 1, it's not an option to be lax on testing your blood sugar! LOL So I've been very careful. Anyway, all is well. I'm on day 7 or so now, and am doing great. I've managed to slightly improve the taste of the shades with a small amount of splenda and some cinnamon and now I actually enjoy the shakes. They DO keep me satiated and I don't crave food as I normally would. I've started adding back into my days very small amounts of grilled chicken breast and steamed vegetables at lunchtime only. I can claim to have lost 4 pounds so far, which is great! It's a start, although I'd like to lose around 60 pounds in total...a hefty goal, I know. Thanks again! Krob

David, while I know every person is different with the amounts of insulin they take, I have found the shakes are more like 4 units of insulin (make sure you test your blood sugar before, then 2 hours after eating, to see if your b/s went up tho). Anyway, I've kept my long-acting nite dosage the same so far and everything is going well. I've lost 4 pounds in about a week of using Almased and my blood sugar has done well. :)

Krob Hello Krob, Congratulations on your weight loss success thus far! Sounds like you are doing well and checking your blood sugars frequently If you want to try a more natural sweetener instead of Splenda, you could try Stevia. There are different products of Stevia on the market, such as Truvia, Sweetleaf etc. You can try them and see which one you like best. They will not interfere with your blood sugar. Silke
